Boost tax collection: BBMP administrator Vijay Bhaskar
There was need for quality changes in finance department
BENGALURU: For BBMP officials this was no ordinary Sunday. Instead of enjoying their weekly off, they had to attend a meeting with newly-appointed BBMP administrator T.M. Vijay Bhaskar. In his maiden meeting, the top officer said there was need for quality changes in finance department and made suggestions to improve tax collection. He even exhorted senior officials to give written suggestions on improving the system!
Addressing the top officials of various departments a day after he took charge, Bhaskar said, “This year, the BBMP has a target of Rs 2,900 crore for property tax. We need to draw a special campaign. To achieve this, we need to rope in officials from other departments too, and not just Revenue department. Draw an action plan immediately.”
He instructed the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) to gather information on tax collection at zonal level, target for each zone and the details of officials who have failed to reach their target. Bhaskar felt changes in the finance department were much needed.
“Accurate details on the income and expenditure of BBMP are needed. The financial system needs quality changes. Make all the transactions of the department online,” he said, suggesting the Additional Commissioner to set a deadline for every initiative and work accordingly. Later, he directed the Additional Commissioner (Admin) to appoint a senior officer who could address citizens’ complaints.
