Hyderabad city plans big dog sterilisation unit

GHMC is looking for a 2-acre site
Hyderabad: Faced with the menace of an increasing stray dog population, the GHMC is on the lookout for a two-acre site in the city outskirts to set up several dog pounds where the animals can be sterilised.
Presently, the GHMC has five birth control centres in each of its five zones and in each centre there is one dog pound. All the dogs caught, adult or puppies, are put in the same pound.
However, five centres are not enough for a population of six lakh stray dogs. An official from the veterinary department said, the birth control cum anti-rabies programme recommended by the Animal Welfare Board of India is being carried out at all five centres. The rabid dogs, terminally ill dogs and fatally injured dogs are only put to sleep under the supervision of a qualified veterinarian.
Presently the GHMC has sufficient expertise for the implementation of the programme. However keeping in mind the growing number of dogs the corporation is looking out for a large site where a full-fledged ABC centre can be set up with more dog pounds. It is also looking for sites were rabid dogs can be buried.
Once a considerable number of dogs are sterilised, the good results will be noticed by people. For each circle, one dog van with a dog catching team is to be provided, they added.
