State focuses on skill-based education

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh government is considering setting up new universities to give a fillip to logistics, tourism and many other sectors in the state. Six universities dedicated to logistics, energy, sports, tourism, hospitality and marine are being planned.
These varsities will primarily focus on research in these specific fields by imparting skill-based education, while also functioning as conventional universities. The CMO has asked for concept papers on each of these six institutions to examine their viability. AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has stressed time and again that the state has potential to turn into logistics, education and tourism hubs, among others.
To bolster the industries and other sectors, the government intends to setup these dedicated varsities that would be able to directly supply skilled manpower to the industries while also engaging in research.
Officials examining the proposals say that if not six standalone universities, the government will definitely go for setting up of three varsities for logistics and energy, marine and sports, tourism and hospitality.
“If we set up six separate universities, it might not be viable because the fields may be too narrow for a university. So we are expecting at least three composite field universities to be approved,” a senior APSCHE official informed.
Existing universities like the SV University, Andhra University etc. will be linked with these universities. Officials said that these varsities will offer conventional degrees but in specific fields only with a better practical approach.
“Along with traditional degrees, we are planning to offer courses like B. Tech in Energy or Logistics etc. And it will be 75 per cent practical and 25 per cent theory,” the APSCHE sources said.
