Supreme Court raises doubt on Operation Smile
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday slammed the Centre for its laxity in dealing with the issue of missing children and expressed concern over the sorry state of affairs.
The social justice bench comprising Justices Madan B. Lokur and Uday Lalit slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the ministry of women and child development to be deposited for not filing a proper affidavit giving the status of missing children traced over a period in all the States.
The Bench was hearing a PIL filed by Bachpan Bachao Andolan on missing children. The court had earlier asked the Centre to file a detailed affidavit on how many children were traced and recovered. The ASG informed the Court that the Centre was pursuing the matter.
Expressing annoyance Justice Lokur said to the ASG “Tell us on affidavit how these children are recovered, not on a piece of paper. What about the project — Operation Smile - to recover missing children?”
