No bail for tainted Protector of Emigrants

The PoE siphoned off Rs 100 crore from nurses recruited for Kuwait’s health ministry
KANNUR: The Ernakulam Sessions Court has refused anticipatory bail to Protector of Emigrants (PoE) in the nursing recruitment scam. According to the CBI, the PoE L. Adolphus and Al Zarafa Travels siphoned off Rs 100 crore from nurses recruited for Kuwait’s health ministry.
The PoE is the first accused. Judge B Kalam Pasha dismissed his bail application, considering gravity of the offence. He held that the case diary reveals prima facie offence.
As per the contract with the Kuwaiti health department, the agency can recruit 1200 nurses charging Rs 19,500 each for service. However, they charged Rs 19.5 lakh per head.
The CBI submitted that the accused may escape the clutches of law if bail is granted and that custodial interrogation is necessary. According to the CBI, Al Zarafa Travels, owned by Uthup Varghese of Kottayam, had recruited 435 nurses to Kuwait. It had raided the offices and residences of the PoE and Varghese.
