CPM to protest against delay in road widening
The CPM district committee is planning a series of protests
Kochi: The CPM district committee is planning a series of protests against the city corporation’s alleged failure to initiate much-awaited Thammanam – Pullepady road widening.
District secretary P. Rajeev alleged that the civic body lapsed JNNURM funds allocated for the project. On May 4, its workers will form a “human road” from MG Road to Chakkaraparambu on NH 47.
“Owners have already surrendered nearly half the land required. But the civic body failed to acquire the remaining land from willing owners. Though the Mayor and chief minister have made several announcements there has been no progress,” he said in a release.
Widening of the Thammanam–Pullepady road is crucial as the 2.8-km stretch is the key alternate route for diverting traffic from MG Road during the Metro works. Meanwhile, the corporation authorities refuted the allegations saying the protest is for gaining political mileage in view of upcoming civic polls.
“It is baseless to say that the civic body lapsed JNNURM funds. Even the CPM leaders are aware that the JNNURM funds were nominal when compared to the total project costs. The local body is not in a position to bear land acquisition costs,” Corporation works committee chairperson Soumini Jain said.
