Bengaluru: Jailbird on the run, cops clueless

Manjuanth (30) had walked out of the front gates of central jail on April 10 evening

Bengaluru: Even a week after a murder convict escaped from the high-security Parappana Agrahara central prison, the police are still to get any leads on his whereabouts. Though the police had claimed that they had clues on the fugitive on the very day of his escape, it is learnt that the policemen who had gone in search of him to various places have returned empty handed.

Manjuanth (30), the murder convict hailing from Chitradurga, had walked out of the front gates of central jail on April 10 evening. He had claimed that he had gone there to extend his parole and had hoodwinked the prison staff by showing them a seal, which is stamped on the hands of the visitors.

The police had formed a special team to track him down. As he was from Chitradurga, a police team had camped in his hometown expecting him to go there to meet his family members. But even after a week of his escape, Manjunath has not gone there and he has not even contacted his family members over phone.

“His friends and relatives too are being tracked, but they don’t have any clues on Manjuanth. His father and sister were questioned, but they are coming out with different versions. The father says Manjunath might have gone to Mangaluru, as he had said he would join fishermen there. A team was sent to Mangaluru, but he was not found,” a senior police officer said.

“His sister, however, said that he had told her once that he would commit suicide by consuming poison, but he would meet his uncle before that. The police teams met all his relatives, but no one has any clue,” the officer said, adding that the police have decided to wait and watch for some more days to track him.
