Unseasonal rains: Venkaiah Naidu assures farmers

Says Centre will help clean Musi, recover losses

Hyderabad: The Centre would help totally clean the Musi, considered one of the worst polluted rivers in the country. The assurance came from Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday to farmers alongside the Musi in Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts.

Mr Naidu said that if required the Centre would facilitate the Telangana government secure World Bank funding for the Musi clean-up and also provide liberal financial assistance.

Mr Naidu, along with Union minister of state for agriculture M. Kundaria and BJP legislator G. Kishan Reddy, visited the areas affected by unseasonal rains during the last three days.

Nalgonda Congress MP, Gutta Sukhender Reddy and Bhongir TRS MP, Bura Narasiah Gowd accompanied the ministers on their field visits.

Mr Venkaiah Naidu assured that the Centre would ensure that the polluted Musi environs turn into a clean and environmental friendly region like Konaseema in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

Inspecting crops damaged by the rains, the ministers met affected farmers and assured them of all possible assistance from the Centre.

He said that due to the recent changes brought about by the NDA government, farmers would get compensation even if the extent of crop damage was 30 per cent.

During visits to Bhongir, Bhudan Pochampalli and Bibinagar mandals in Nalgonda district, he said the state government has to submit a detailed report of the damage to the Centre.

An official committee appointed by the Centre would inspect the areas and will decide on the compensation.

Elsewhere, Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre were ready to extend all sorts of support to the farming community.

He asked state officials to follow revised norms when providing compensation to farmers.

He said the NDA government was trying to provide effective crop insurance scheme to farmers.

Rationalisation of the scheme is under process, he added.
