Telangana says no to Krishnapatnam power
Hyderabad: Despite Andhra Pradesh offering Krishnapatnam thermal power for just Rs 4.90 paisa per unit, the Telangana government is not in the mood to buy it.
It has decided to go according to the stated position of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, top sources said.
Mr Rao had said during the recent Assembly session that the state will not hanker after the AP government for supply of Krishnapatnam power since it is costly and not in the long term interests of the state.
Telangana is also not buying the costly power from Kayamkulam which NTPC offered for Rs 9.70 paisa per unit.
Though a PPA was inked with the state-owned power giant, the government reportedly declined the offer for the simple reason that it will not buy nearly 400 MW for such a whopping price.
Telangana has been purchasing 34 million units from southern exchange and various other sources daily.
“We need this additional power up to June, i.e. hardly for another two-to-two and-a-half months. For that, we made arrangements to buy 1,000 MW of power from NTPC, southern exchange and also some private power units to meet the shortage. We will overcome the crisis and from July, there will not be any problem,” a confident G. Raghuma Reddy, CMD of TS Southern Distribution Company, told this newspaper.
“We can have surplus power but since Telangana government has not formally approached us for supply from Krishnapatnam, we will not press them,” K. Vijayanand, CMD of APTransco and APGenco said.
In fact, the Telangana government has been fighting for its legitimate share (53.89 per cent) in the 1,600 MW of Krishnapatnam power but Andhra Pradesh rejected giving even a single megawatt on the ground that the PPA was not ratified by the then (united) Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Telangana knocked on the doors of the Centre and CEA seeking justice. The Committee will deliver its ruling on April 30.
The Telangana government has not pinned hopes on it and is making its own arrangements.
