Glitch in Narendra Modi’s plane, standby sent

A technical problem was noticed in Air India One, Air India sources revealed

New Delhi: The Air India Boeing 747 which flew Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Europe developed a technical glitch, that forced the national carrier to rush a standby plane, another 747, from Mumbai to Berlin early on Tuesday. It was this aircraft that flew Mr Modi from Germany to Canada, the third and final leg of his ongoing three-nation tour. Air India has ordered a probe.

The glitch was noticed as Air India One was flying from France to Germany, but the exact details are not known, though some reports late Tuesday said it was an “engine problem”.

“A technical problem was noticed in Air India One. The standby aircraft was dispatched from Mumbai to Berlin immediately. The airline will investigate why the technical snag occurred,” Air India sources told DC.

The national carrier keeps an aircraft on standby — another Boeing 747 — that can take over as Air India One in case the aircraft flying the PM develops any technical glitch.

Sources said the aircrafts were acquired by the Air India in 1996.
