Trees uprooted, water stagnates in twin cities

Hyderabad: The recent rains felled several trees, damaged roads and led to water stagnation at a few areas in the city, throwing life out of gear. The Twin Cities received 63 mm of rain in 36 hours till 2 pm on Monday, with a fresh spell hitting the city in the wee hours of Monday with gusty winds, resulting in some loss of greenery. The recorded rainfall in Begumpet was 61.3 mm whereas it was 50 mm in Golconda.
Municipal and Electricity department officials received several complaints regarding water stagnation at various points in the city. Due to waterlogging and deteriorated road conditions, traffic was adversely affected on major roads. There was waterlogging in and around houses at Allamthota Bavi, Mayur Marg, and Begumpet, causing inconvenience to road users.
Waterlogging at Alkapuri near Adarshnagar, Road No.1 took some time to be cleared and the GHMC had to set up additional motors. Nearly 68 waterlogging points were identified in the Central Zone (Koti, Abids, Nampally, Himayatnagar).
A few electrical poles had also fallen while trees at NTR Marg near Lumbini Park were almost falling over. A bus shelter at Barkatpura, near the Raghavendra Swamy temple, collapsed. The ongoing Metro works, compounded with the rains, cramped the junctions.
A fresh downpour hit the city late on Monday in the Secunderabad area, with hailstones reported at Begumpet. The Meteorology department said the rain and thunderstorms with or without hailstorm will continue on Tuesday. In the last 36 hours ending 2 pm on Monday, the city recorded 6.3 cm of rain. Begumpet recorded 6.13 cm and Golconda, 5 cm.
About 30 trees fell in Chikkadpally, Naraynaguda and other areas. In Red Hills, strong winds led to two large trees falling on the main road. Municipal and electricity officials received complaints regarding water stagnation at various points in the city. Traffic was adversely affected on the major roads. Rainwater entered houses at Allamthota Bavi, Mayur Marg, and Begumpet.
Power supply was snapped in several localities from late Sunday night and was not restored till Monday afternoon. Heavy rains also damaged large quantities of onions at the Malakpet market yard.
