Draining work stalled at the lake

Hyderabad: With the city experiencing rains for the last 48 hours, the works of the last two weeks to drain the Hussain Sagar has gone back to square one. In fact, the water level has increased by 2 feet due to the unseasonal downpour.
The four sluices on the bund and the two weirs of the tank have to be deepened further for the water to gush out and decrease the level. The rain has also disturbed the schedule of the sluice repairs by re-filling the tank. If the rain continues for two more days, the day-wise plans will be further delayed, thus hampering the draining process. Hyderabad on Sunday had received 55 mm of rain. On Monday too certain parts of the city witnessed rain for the third consecutive day. The sluices are being repaired so that million litres of water per day can be flushed out when the draining process starts. Currently, the sluices opposite the Marriott Hotel are being repaired and the weir near Lumbini Park has been deepened.
The state government in February had taken the first step towards dewatering Hussainsagar by sanctioning '58.96 crore to divert polluted water that flows into the lake through the Kukatpally Nala to the upstream areas of Musi by constructing a separate pipeline.
