GHMC has useless plan

A letter has been submitted to the Telangana Chief Secretary on how the biggest municipality’s 100-day plan has none of the top priority plans like roads, solid waste management treatment and more.

When a citizen pays property tax it is expected that the tax paid is used to provide civic amenities, especially good roads, efficient drainage system, potable water and street light. However the 100-day action plan submitted by the GHMC entails 1) Providing cards (driver cum owner) to 5,000 people, 2) Construction of multipurpose function halls, 3) Skill development to 5,000 youth 4) 1,000 volley ball courts, 1,000 basket ball courts and 1,000 vyayama shalas (gym).

All these amenities though required are second priority for the civic body for there are many other agencies like social welfare and other wings of the government which can take care of these mentioned in the 100-day plan. Mr M. Padmanabha Reddy, Secretary Forum for Good Governance said, “About Rs 1,200 crore in property tax which the GHMC special officer has painstakingly collected should be used for providing civic amenities.

The tax payers of Hyderabad need water conservation. Over the last couple of years the city is experiencing serious water shortage and there is an urgent need for Rain Water Harvesting Pits. Secondly for cleaning of drains, annually close to Rs 20 crore is spent but the work has not been done properly leading to flooding of roads after short duration showers. Till date the GHMC has no action plan on solid waste management and recycling used water by both the GHMC and HMWSSB.
