Retail inflation hits 5.17 per cent

Vegetables and fruits brought down the overall food inflation to 6.14 per cent in March

New Delhi: The retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) dipped to three months low of 5.17 per cent in March due to easing of food prices despite unseasonal rains. The drop in the prices of milk, vegetables and fruits brought down the overall food inflation to 6.14 per cent in March, from 6.79 per cent recorded in February.

Retail inflation was at 5.37 per cent in February, and 5.19 per cent in January. It was 8.25 per cent in March last year. “For the year as a whole, CPI inflation fell to 6 per cent in 2014-15 from 9.5 per cent in the previous fiscal.

Thanks to a favourable base effect, lower minimum support prices (MSP) increased, quick fix measures taken by the government to keep a tap on food inflation, reduction in vegetable inflation, volatility and subdued oil prices among other things," said rating agency Crisil.
