Telangana focuses on new 24/7 power plan
Hyderabad: The Telangana government has almost evolved an action plan for supplying round the clock power to all domestic and industrial consumers as well as nine hours of continuous power to agricultural feeders.
The brain-storming session at Nagarjunasagar held in the last two days discussed all measures needed to be taken for implementing 24x7 power supply. Sources said efforts will be made to advance implementation of the PFA (Power For All) scheme from 2018 to the first half of 2017 itself.
One of the main hurdles identified is the lack of proper grid connectivity across the state. Transmission lines have not been upgraded to carry the additional electricity.
"If no proper steps are taken, transmission and distribution losses will increase," a senior official warned. According to TS Transco, the transmission losses in February were 2.86%. Strengthening of 220, 132 and 33 KV lines and upgrading substations will be taken up on priority.
An additional 1,800 MW will come from Singareni (1,200 MW) and Bhoopalapalli 600 MW) by March 2016 and by the end of 2017 at least another 4,000 MW will be available. Officials say that transmission lines cannot withstand such a huge load. So construction of additional sub stations will be required, a Discom director who was part of the sub-group which prepared the reports said.
Recently, a Central team visited the state and discussed the measures needed for 24x7 power supply. It asked the state to submit a Detailed Project Report within a month. The brainstorming session discussed the DPR and it is likely to be submitted to the Union Power Ministry by this month-end, sources said. Nine hours of power to agriculture will be done from the next Kharif season, the government said .
