Hail, thunderstorm alerts issued for Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

Meteorologists, however, say the ongoing rains are not abnormal

Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a hailstorm and thunderstorm warning for Telangana and AP for the next couple of days.

Meteorologists, however, say the ongoing rains are not abnormal. “They occur whenever there is a change in the wind pattern. Now moist southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are starting to flow in this direction. Because of the hot weather, the moist winds rise up and result in rainfall,” said Dr Y.K. Reddy, director, IMD Hyderabad.

The rain in Telangana over the past couple of days was caused by a upper trough extending from Lakshadweep till Chhattisgarh, weather officials said. The trough dissipated by late evening on Saturday according to data from the Insat images acquired by the IMD.

Dr Reddy said heavy downpours could be expected in the next couple of months before the monsoon arrives. “Rains in these months are quite normal. But we can’t forecast them in advance. Only about two to three days’ notice can be given,” he said.

The forecast for the next couple days is thunderstorms, accompanied even by hailstorms, in some places in the two states.

Seven districts of TS, barring Hyderabad, Karimnagar and Khammam, received excessive rainfall on Saturday, along with Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.
