Vaiko leads protest to Chittoor, arrested
Vellore: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary, Vaiko, and several of his party men were arrested on Friday when they were proceeding in a procession to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh from Vellore. The rally was to condemn the action of the red sanders anti-smuggling task force of Andhra Pradesh, killing 20 workers belonging to Tamil Nadu. They were arrested by the Vellore police near Gandhi statue on Anna Salai here.
Mr Vaiko, who spoke to mediapersons before the procession began, demanded that TN take steps to ensure that the AP government conducts an enquiry with a sitting judge, instead of holding a magisterial enquiry. He said announcing a magisterial enquiry would absolve all those involved in the killing. The killing of TN workers was premeditated as all the workers were shot at close range, he said. He also wanted a second post-mortem to be conducted on the victims. Mr Vaiko deplored that PM Narendra Modi had not conveyed his condolences to the families of the TN workers killed.
Arakkonam Graduates Association, Arakkon-am Tamil Sangam, Railway Passengers Association and Tamil Nadu Union of Journalists have decided to jointly organise an agitation on Saturday, demanding a compensation of '1 crore to the families of the victims.
