Ramalinga Raju is prisoner No. 4148
Hyderabad: Satyam Computers founder Ramalinga Raju will be prisoner number 4148 and his brother Rama Raju number 4147 at the Cherlapally prison. The two were shifted to Cherlapally Jail on Thursday itself following the court’s verdict.
Reportedly, they have been housed in the Maasa Barrack of the Cherlapally Jail.
On Thursday, the judge also convicted Ramalinga Raju and Ramakrishna under Section 201 IPC (destruction of evidence). The judge ruled that the sentences awarded for various counts would run concurrently.
During the trial, the judge examined 3,137 documents and 226 witnesses and 20 material objects. The CBI had filed the first chargesheet on April 7, 2009, the second one on November 24, 2009 and the third on January 7, 2010. In his verdict, judge Chakravarthi, observed: “Before I conclude the judgement… I would like to place on record my appreciation for the assistance extended by special public prosecutors and counsel for the accused; I appreciate the work done by my staff members who wholeheartedly supported me.”
Raju & Co to appeal the verdict
The defence counsel of Ramalinga Raju and other convicted are planning to move sessions court against the judgment of the special court. An appeal is likely to be moved in a week’s time.
Mr. E. Uma Maheshwar Rao, the counsel appearing for Ramalinga Raju, said, “As the court had informed about the right of filing appeal against the judgment, we will do it. We will appeal in the next higher court, the sessions court.”
Another counsel for the accused on condition of anonymity said that they may file an appeal in the court of the metropolitan sessions judge at Nampally on Monday.
Meanwhile, Raju was earlier convicted by special court for economic offences in Hyderabad.
It had handed Raju a six months prison term in December 2014. He was also fined Rs 10.5 lakh in six different cases filed by the Serious Frauds Investigation Office.
Along with him, his brother Rama Raju, former CFO V. Srinivas, former director Ram Mynampati were also sentenced to six months prison and fined Rs 30,000 each.
