Lake business fear losses

Sailing clubs think cleaning process may hit work

Hyderabad: Commercial establishments, mainly food outlets along Hussainsagar, who are lease payers to the HMDA, want to know if the state will compensate for the loss during the draining and filling process of the lake or whether their rents for the period will be waived off.

There are two major annual sailing events scheduled in July 2015 that attracts hundreds of visitors, the Monso-on Regatta for eight days and the Hyderabad Sailing Week. Also, the National Laser Show is scheduled for July and the Hyderabad Kayaka-thon for October. However with the draining process, the events are now uncertain, say organisers.

The private sailing cum training and rowing clubs operating are clueless and fear that their operations will be affected. None of the non-profit clubs, including the ones run by the Defense and the state have been informed about the timeline and schedule of the tank cleaning process.

Colonel C.P Singh Deo, former president of the Rowing Federa-tion said, “We are worried because the Indian rowing team is being trained here for Olym-pics and other internationally recognised meets. We have no information except from the newspapers on draining. There are 46 trainees and Hussain-sagar is the best training center for rowing in the country, and if there is no water for months, how can we conduct training sessions?”

There are four big eateries including the Water Front, Eat Street and Dosa’s along the Necklace Road and more than 20 stalls. “Annually we pay '27 lakh to the HMDA. If the process is extended to six month or more, the corporation should give up on collecting the lease for that period. The joints will have to close down when the water is pumped out, people will not come to visit Hussainsagar leave alone for a meal,” added a owner of a food outlet.
