Delhi road rage: BJP workers protest outside Arvind Kejriwal's house
New Delhi: Around 200 BJP workers on Thursday staged a protest outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence in north Delhi's Civil Lines over the recent incident of road rage in Turkman Gate area.
The protesters, led by the BJP's city unit chief Satish Upadhyay, gathered near Kejriwal's 6, Flagstaff Road residence around 11 AM and tried to break barricades outside his house and clashed with security personnel, prompting the police to use water canons to disperse them.
Shouting slogans, the BJP activists alleged that the five accused arrested in the case were AAP workers close to Delhi Environment Minister and Matia Mahal MLA Asim Ahmed Khan.
Demanding Khan's resignation, Upadhyay said, "AAP had claimed that they will not allow any such immoral acts. Our clear accusation is that the accused who committed this crime are supporters of the minister (Asim Ahmed Khan) in whose area this incident took place."
"There were posters in the area carrying photos of the accused with the minister. He should be immediately sacked from his position," he said.
Later, police detained around 200 demonstrators including Upadhyay, BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri and North Delhi Mayor Yogender Chandolia.
"We have detained nearly 200 protesters in this connection as they tried to break barricades. Mild force in the form of water canon was used to disperse the crowd," DCP (North) Madhur Verma said.
Md Shahnawaz (38) was allegedly beaten to death in front of his minor sons in central Delhi's Turkman Gate area on Sunday night. He was attacked by the occupants of a car after his bike grazed their vehicle. Police have arrested all the five accused in the case.
Shahnawaz, who ran a shop dealing in electronic scrap material in Mata Sundar Road area, was returning home with his sons Fahad (13) and Kaif (9) after visiting his parents at Chandni Mahal area when the incident took place.
The victim's family had met Kejriwal at Delhi Secretariat yesterday. During the meeting, Kejriwal assured them of all possible help by the government and asked Khan to submit a report on how the family can be helped. Shahnawaz is survived by his wife Mumtaz, two sons, Fahad and Kaif and six-year-old daughter Talbia.
