BJP backtracks, raises doubts over Pattiseema
Hyderabad: The Pattiseema project has widened the gulf in the ruling alliance after senior BJP leaders raised serious objections over the scheme.
Former minister D. Purandeswari questioned the government for spending Rs 1,500 crore for a temporary project. “The state government is maintaining that it is a temporary project and is aimed at providing drinking water needs of Rayalaseema. We have two on-going projects — Galeru-Nagari and Handri-Neeva — meant for Rayalaseema. Polavaram will provide water to Rayalaseema. Why should the government not complete Galeru-Nagari and Handri Neeva with the money,” she asked.
State BJP president K. Haribabu said, “The government is saying that it would complete the project in one year and four months have gone by. If it can complete it within a year, it is okay. If the project is delayed, there is no use since Polavaram will be in full steam by then,” he said.
In the recent Assembly session, the BJP had supported government's stand on Pattiseema but cautioned any compromise on the interests of Godavari delta farmers.
