You have to remain honest and that’s a big struggle in a relationship: Kalki Koechlin
In a candid chat the actress shares her take on infidelity and loyalty
Kalki Koechlin has applied for a divorce and she’ll soon be officially separated from Anurag Kashyap. The actress has handled the split and the rumours that came along with it in a dignified manner. In a candid chat she shares her take on infidelity and loyalty. She also talks about filming the intimate scenes in Margarita With a Straw and shares her plans of directing a play in the coming months. Excerpts:
Can you tell us the status of your film based on the Nanavati murder case?
It is inspired by that but we are making it clear that it’s not a true story. The film is not starting till June and I am directing a play in between.
You will be playing an adulterous wife in that. What’s your personal take on infidelity?
You have to remain honest and that’s a big struggle in a relationship. We are not prepared for the truth and we all have a huge ego.
Your personal life made many headlines, but you smiled through it all…
I think you have to smile because life throws all sort of things at you and you have to learn to have a good attitude. I wouldn’t be able to smile today if I hadn’t felt like we’ve been honest with each other as a couple. It’s a journey. People don’t see the daily process or the tough times. You don’t see me going to a hospital when my mother is sick. It’s like you don’t see an actor farting but it’s a normal human thing that all of us do. So it’s not like I smile all the time. I have a lucky life and have a lot of good people around me.
You think couples today want to have more choices in their relationship?
You know Oscar Wilde said, anyone who loved once is a shallow boring person, because you don’t, I am sorry. I know couples that have their other relationship and still stay together. It’s very personal, a choice everyone has to make and the only way to do it is to be extremely honest with the people you love. It’s very hard to say that I’ll only love one person. I think it’s important to acknowledge the one you love, and what you choose to do should not hurt them.
You have said that Margarita With A Straw is like a rom-com…
It really is. Only because we are talking about a disability in the movie, we think it’s going to be very heavy dark film. It’s actually a light and romantic film.
Did you have reservations about being intimate with a female co-star?
I am probably more comfortable with a girl than a guy. In terms of doing an intimate scene, just because girls are girls and I don’t think we are homophobic like two boys are. It’s easier somehow for girls. I have been in a boarding school so I have been surrounded by naked girls ruait became very difficult to be real. There are so many people in the room and you are repeating the same thing over and over again. It’s tough. But in terms of ethics, I have no problems at all.
Shonali tells us that Viacom, initially, wanted another bankable heroine but she stood by you.
I have been so lucky that people have done that for me. A lot of people want to work with me because they want an actor in the role. I find that flattering.
Is it tough to find characters you wish to play on screen?
It’s hard to just find good scripts, forget about finding a good character.
