Haryana state boxing champion Rishu Mittal forced to work as maid

She is forced to work as a domestic help to continue her schooling

New Delhi: If the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal or doping controversies weren’t enough to mar Indian sports, now in a shocking development, Rishu Mittal, a state level gold medallist boxer, is forced to work as a domestic help to continue her schooling.

But why is Rishu, who studies in class 10 doing this? The little she earns by working at the nearby houses is spent paying her school fees. The talented sportswoman lives with her brother who works at a local shop.

After completing her routine morning job, Rishu attends school and in the evenings she spends time practicing her skills as a pugilist. "This girl has lost her parents. Her brother is doing a low paying job. She works at other people's home to survive," her coach Rajinder Singh reportedly said.

Hailing from Kaithal in Haryana, she dreams to make it big in boxing someday. Rishu has under her belt a gold medal in the State level Championship in 2014 in the 46 kg category and has also represented Haryana during the National Championships in Gwalior last December.
