Soldier killed in Jammu and Kashmir was expected home in April

Sepoy N. Shiva Shanker was about to retire from the Army

Hyderabad: Mahbubnagar native Sepoy N. Shiva Shanker, who was killed in a Ladakh avalanche, was planning to spend time at his newly built house in Kamaram in April. He also had plans to take his toddler to the Balaji temple and get the child tonsured.

Though Shanker, 36, had told his wife that he would come home on April 2, his team was stranded due to heavy rain and snow in Leh. Shanker was about to retire from the Army. “He had called his wife earlier and said that he would come home in the first week of April. Later, she got to know that Shanker was stranded several km away from the head camp office,” said Shanker’s brother Linganna.

“He could have taken a leave of more than a month. He was planning to take the kid to Balaji,” Linganna added. Shanker’s body arrived at the RGI Airport on Monday. On Tuesday, it will be taken to his native village, where the last rites will be performed.
