Militants’ number dwindling in Jammu and Kashmir

Normally around 500 to 800 militants operate in the Valley

New Delhi: Operative militants in Jammu and Kashmir has dropped to a mere 25, which top intelligence sources claim as a huge success of the security forces. Normally around 500 to 800 militants operate in the Valley with an additional 500 providing them logistical or tactical support.

“On an average 500 key militants operate in the Valley while an equal number providing them with backup support. But, now our information reveals that the number of these key operative militants has dropped to just 25 which probably explains the improved security environment in the Valley,’’a senior security official said.

Sources claimed that this was the biggest drop in the number of key militants operating in the Valley, since subversive activities started in the region in late 80s. This fall in number is attributed to two major factors. Firstly, Indian security forces, both the Army and the BSF, have been able to thwart all major infiltration attempts by militants in last one year. Secondly, security forces have been able to eliminate almost all major militant commanders, operating here.
