2 workers die at GAIL gas unit
Hyderabad: Two persons were killed and three others were injured in a mishap at a Gas Authority India Limited (GAIL) facility in Suryapet town in Nalgonda district on Saturday. The accident occurred when an instrumental “pig”, which is used to clean the pipeline got ejected. However, there was no fire or blast.
The gas is supplied from Visakhapatnam to Cherlapally distribution channels in Hyderabad and its IP-2 switch station is located in Suryapet. High-pressured gas came out from the pipeline and two workers standing near its mouth were blown away and dashed against a nearby compound wall and died.
Officials said the workers were not supposed to stand in front of the barrel of the pipeline during pigging or cleaning operations.
The deceased were identified as Roshan Tiwari, 42, manager and a native of Bihar and V. Ramesh, 35, a technician and resident of Hyderabad. The injured are Balakrishna, a deputy manager and technicians Venkanna and Narasimhulu.
Sources said the gas pipeline is cleaned once in two months using the “pig” instrument.
