Krishna river may not quench thirst of peripheral areas of Hyderabad

Inadequate pipeline distribution system cause for inadequate water supply

Hyderabad: Even as 45 million gallons of water per day (MGD) from the Krishna phase-III project will be available to the city soon, the colonies in the peripheral areas of the GHMC will still be dry on most of the days. In many of the colonies, regular water supply will remain a dream because of the inadequate pipeline distribution system.

“In some of these municipalities, there is only one line for 20 colonies. The old network was not laid as per the plan. Often the pipeline diameter is 250-300mm. We obviously can’t supply more water with the existing distribution system. These colonies will perhaps get water every alternate day,” said a senior official from the Water Board.

Currently, places like Quthbullapur, Alwal and Kapra get water once every four or five days; and the quantity of water supplied hasn’t changed over the past decade. For instance, around 10 years ago, Quthbullapur used to get 12 MGD. Back then, the population of Quthbullapur was around 1.25 lakh and the area had over 16,000 water connections. “Today, it has 65,000 official water connections and the population has grown to nearly 5 lakh. However, the quantity of water supply has remained the same,” said KP Vivekanand, MLA of Quthbullapur.

“There is no proper planning. Officials and the government know that the network is not adequate. But despite a number of representations made, the pipeline projects are pending,” Mr Vivekanand added.
