Man held, wife, daughter end life

Unable to bear humiliation, wife and daughter killed their pet dog and committed suicide

Ongole: The wife and daughter of a man who was arrested by the police ended their lives in Kothapet area of Chirala on Friday morning after killing their pet dog. All three were found hanging from the ceiling fan in their house.

Sub-inspector M.D. Abdul Subhani said M. Praveen Kumar, 70, his wife M. Kanaka Ratnam, 65, and their daughter Shruti, 25, had come from Vizianagaram and were residing in Kothapet.

Praveen had assured jobs to three youths and allegedly collected Rs 1 lakh from them. However, he failed to get them jobs. The youths demanded that he return their money. Unable to do so, Praveen and his family decided to leave Chirala.

However, locals caught him even as the family was trying to leave Chirala on Friday and informed the youths who lodged a police complaint against him following which he was taken into custody for questioning.

Unable to bear the humiliation of his arrest, his wife and daughter killed their pet dog and then committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling fan using saris. When neighbours knocked on their door, nobody responded following which the police was informed.

Inspector Md Abdul Subhani said, “I cannot say what the exact reason for their suicide was. They may be owing money to people in Vizianagaram. We are questioning Praveen as the youth complained that the family was trying to escape the pressure. We have to register a case against him. We are also inquiring in Vizianagram.”
