Giriraj Singh no better than a rapist, says Nirbhaya documentary maker Leslee Udwin

Udwin said PM Narendra Modi should sack ministers like Giriraj Singh

New Delhi: Controversial BJP leader and Union Minister Giriraj Singh has ignited an unending row by his racist and sexist remarks on Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Political leaders from across the party line have hit out at Singh terming his comments as derogatory and in full contempt of women.

Taking strong objection to comments by the minister, Nirbhaya documentary maker Leslee Udwin said ‘Singh is no better than a rapist’.

"This really sickens me. The hypocrisy of mini mouthed, unthinking comments by those who say my film gives platform to rapists, but why has Indian Parliament for many years, given a platform to politicians making such misogynist comments. They are no worse, no better than Mukesh Singh's comments," Udwin told CNN-IBN.

Udwin further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should sack ministers like Giriraj Singh.

Singh said on Tuesday that it was the colour of Sonia Gandhi's skin that made her the Congress president.

Sitting among a group of his supporters in Hajipur, Singh asked, "If Rajiv Gandhi would've married a Nigerian and Sonia Gandhi wasn't white-skinned, would Congress have accepted her?"

Singh, who is known for his blistering statements, also raised questions on the disappearance of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and compared it to the missing Malaysian flight.

"If Congress had been in power instead of us and Rahul Gandhi was the Prime Minister and then, for some reason, he would have disappeared for 43-47 days, what would have happened? The entire Budget session got over but where is Rahul Gandhi?”

"The absence of Rahul Gandhi is like the disappearance of a Malaysian plane which has still not been located," said Singh.

Later, Singh was forced to express regret after a call from BJP President Amit Shah who made it clear to him that "such language" was not acceptable.

Singh, who is known to be a serial offender in contentious statements, apologised saying his comments were meant to be "off the record."
