Woman’s burnt body found on spouse’s pyre in Maharashtra
Latur (Maharashtra): The body of a 50-year-old woman was found at her husband’s pyre giving rise to suspicion that she performed ‘sati’, a practice banned in India.
On Tuesday, when the family members went to collect the ashes of 55-year-old Tukaram Mane, they found his wife Usha’s burnt body in the pyre. Usha, 50, had gone missing within hours of funeral.
Latur SP Dnyaneshwar Chavan said Tukaram, from Lohata village, died and cremated on Sunday. However, on Monday, it was found that the body not fully burnt and he was cremated again.
“On Monday night, Usha, who was ailing and weak, went missing and her burnt body was found at Tukaram’s pyre the next day,” he said. The kin then lit another pyre to conduct her last rites.
Mr Chavan said it was surprising that nobody from the family or village approached them to inform about these events.
