Telangana: Trifurcation of GHMC dropped

GHMC polls too are likely to be held in 2016

Hyderabad: The TRS government seems to have dropped its plan to trifurcate the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

The government’s proposal to have 200 divisions as against the present 150 gives enough indication of a change of mind. GHMC polls too are likely to be held in 2016 and not before that, say sources.

In the past, there had been a proposal to break up the unwieldy GHMC into old MCH, Secunderabad and Cyberabad corporations for both administrative and political reasons, but the plan has now seems to have fizzled out.

“The government seems to have dropped the proposal to trifurcate GHMC going by its proposal to have 200 divisions. Elections too will be held only next year since the government has sought time for delimitation of divisions, reservation of divisions and election schedule,” an MIM leader told this newspaper.

Meanwhile, the BJP, which won the MLC polls and hopes for good results in GHMC, is crying foul over the government’s delaying tactics. “The government is trying to drag the polls fearing a rout,” said TS BJP president G. Kishan Reddy.

According to the BJP, the plan to drop the trifurcation of the GHMC is a tactic to delay the GHMC polls

“The government is trying to drag the polls fearing a rout. Former chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy had completed the process in a month’s time and had held polls on the High Court’s direction. It’s nothing but a politically selfish decision of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti government,” said Telangana state BJP president G. Kishan Reddy.

However, going by the political parties’ strength in the GHMC area, alliances between the major players in the 200 divisions of the GHMC is inevitable. Even a two-party rule will be difficult and may require three-party alliances in case of a fractured verdict.

Meanwhile the MIM, which had 43 corporators in the 150-division GHMC, still holds the trump card. The party will continues its alliance with the TRS and there is also a likelihood of a TRS-MIM-Congress alliance on one side and a TD-BJP alliance on the other.

In the last 150-strength body, the Congress had 51 corporators, TD 45, MIM 43, BJP six, Praja Rajyam, MBT one and Independents three. In the 200-member body, 40 will be ex-officio members, it is learnt.

“In the city, the divisions will go up from 100 to 110 while in areas forming parts of Ranga Reddy and Medak, they will increase from 50 to 90 divisions, totalling 200. In addition, there will be 24 MLAs, five Lok Sabha MPs, six-seven MLCs and three to five Rajya Sabha members as ex-officio members. Alliances are inevitable,” explained the MIM leader.
