Pro-ISIS tweeter Mehdi Masroor Biswas may face charges under IT Act
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police will have to take legal opinion in framing charges against Mehdi Masroor Biswas — the 24-year-old alleged key propagandist of the violent global jihadi organisation IS — under Section 66 of the IT Act.
Mehdi was arrested in December 2014 after he was outed by Channel 4 for allegedly running a pro-ISIS Twitter account @ShamiWitness under Section 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2012, Section 125 of the IPC, Sections 66A and 66F of the IT Act, 2000.
With the Apex Court striking down Section 66 of the IT Act, the Central Crime Branch of the city police, which is investigating the case and is shortly going to submit the chargesheet, will have to consult legal experts before finalising the charges against Mehdi.
Cops said there is, however, enough evidence against Mehdi under other Sections of law under which he was arrested for inciting vulnerable youth to convert to violent jihad.
“We will submit the chargesheet in April,” said a source.
