Instagram censors artist's photo series about menstruation
No freedom to express?
Mumbai: Social media is going abuzz with pictures of Rupi Kaur, a feminist poet's photo of a girl menstruating, where her bed sheet can be seen stained with blood. The poet was actually trying to bring the taboo around menstruation to fore front as the theme of her university project. Instead she became the victim of Instagram's censorship war.
Kaur had uploaded an image which depicts her fully clothed yet her clothes can be seen stained. Instagram removed the picture and said it violated the terms of their service. Kaur then went on Facebook and shared her thoughts on the same.
Instagram has not explained why the picture has been removed but after Kaur's post detailing the incident and being the talk on social media, the photo sharing site changed it's mind. The image for now has been restored on the account, but it highlights the censorship one is subjected to even on social networking sites.
thank you Instagram for providing me with the exact response my work was created to critique. you deleted my photo twice...
