Made-in-India to spur superbike business
Hyderabad: Despite an incredible growth in the sales of super bikes in India, the volume growth of the premium motorcycles continues to be minuscule due to their high price tag, said Shirish Kulkarni, chairman, DSK Motowheels.
“The superbike industry is growing at 60 per cent every year, while the ordinary two-wheeler market is growing at 10-12 per cent. But in terms of volume, super bike industry is growing at a slower pace with just about 12,000 units being sold per year as they are priced at a higher price anywhere between Rs 8-Rs 10 lakh,” Mr Kulkarni told this correspondent. The solution for this, according to him, lies in localisation of the super bikes and acquisition of requisite technology.
“One of the problems facing the industry is the lack of availability of localisation of the bikes. Currently the whole line-up is via the CKD route i.e. imported and assembled in India. Manufacturers should consider localisation otherwise in four to five years the business will become stagnant. We hope that foreign firms will share their techonology with us soon,”said Mr Kulkarni.
