Protests near Telangana, Andhra Pradesh assemblies
Hyderabad: Unemployed youth and Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti activists threatened to lay siege to the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Assemblies, but were stopped by the police.
The police cordoned off the entire Assembly area, frisked those coming into TS and AP Assemblies, put checkposts at different locations to prevent agitators from entering the Assemblies and imposed prohibitory orders.
Several MRPS activists, led by Manda Krishna Madiga, were arrested by the police when they tried to go to AP Assembly demanding categorisation of SCs into ABCD groups.
Both, students and the MRPS, gave the call as part of their protest rally. Following the threat, the police was on high alert since Tuesday night and put up barricades at vantage points, especially the route to Assembly buildings.
Traffic was disrupted for a couple of hours on Wednesday morning around the Assembly area, Tank Bund, Lakdi-ka-pul, Basheerbagh and the Secretariat as the police checked vehicles to prevent entry of the unemployed youth and MRPS activists.
MRPS activists who tried to stage a dharna near the Assembly were taken into custody. The police was on alert till the Assembly session were over.
“We did not want to take chances with MRPS activists. We have seen them in the past hence we have tightened security,” a police officer said.
MRPS president Manda Krishna Madiga who was arrested by police at Lakdikapul demanded the Andhra Pradesh government pass a resolution categorising SCs into ABCD groups. He wanted the Assembly to take up problems of Dalits and establish a separate University for Dalits.
