Burglars top wanted list
Hyderabad: Burglars top the list of most wanted fugitives in Cyberabad commissionerate. 154 burglars who burgled houses across the city in the last four years are still on the job. Dacoits are the second largest group of fugitives in Cyberabad with 72 of them absconding. A considerable number of vehicle thieves are also absconding.
Cyberabad officials say many are ‘visitors’ as they normally live in other states or districts and come to the city only for thefts. Officials say there are periodical special drives to catch fugitives. Since burglary is one of the most frequent crimes in Cyberabad sometimes the police give up on old crimes and focus on new cases. Thus, many old offenders remain free.
“New burglary gangs are emerging in the city. When we go after them we lose trace of old offenders. Many of the wanted criminals are offenders who jumped bail and took shelter in other districts and states,” said a senior official from Cyberabad.
Cyberabad police commissioner C.V. Anand said the number of fugitives is less now. “We had over 5,000 pending NBWs one-and-a-half years ago but now it has come down to 3,000,” he said. He said the police have also formed special teams to track the fugitives.
“There are special teams under ACPs to execute NBWs. The teams are focusing on fugitives in Hyderabad, other districts of Telangana, AP, other states and even abroad,” said the commissioner. He added that when the number goes up they will add more teams and launch special drives.
Officials added that another way to catch fugitives is by conducting frequent vehicle checks and taking tip-offs from arrested offenders. The top cops said that photographs and details of fugitives are available on the commissionerate’s website and anybody can inform the police if they come across these criminals.
