Here's why you can never book a railway ticket online during early hours

Mumbai: Even though IRCTC has a fully functional website and recently launched an app, booking railway tickets online is a frustating process that most of us have faced. It is perhaps one of the worst ways to book rail tickets. Server errors, slow speed, website breakdowns are the many reasons that plague the IRCTC portal.
However, a recent report in The Indian Express throws light on and explains why it is impossible to book tickets online. According to the report, an internal investigation revealed that every day, 4,000 confirmed berths on popular trains — Rajdhanis, Durontos and other long-distance trains would be hoarded by touts within one minute of the computer reservation system being thrown open to public.

The growing breed of touts monopolise the tickets by booking tickets on less popular trains a day earlier and as soon as the website opens for reservation they would swap them for tickets on the trains which are more in demand. This was made possible through a provision where purchased tickets can be rescheduled for another train journey.
The report also highlighted that the investigation also indicated that booking clerks and other insiders were involved in this ticket booking racket. IRCTC launched a mobile app last year specifically designed for Android phones which was aimed at provided relief for booking tickets on the go.
