It's not a censor board but, it’s a certification board: Aamir Khan
I&B minister Rajyavardhan Rathore assures the film fraternity that they will not face any issues
Mumbai: The film industry’s biggest names met with Rajyavardhan Rathore, the minister of state for information & broadcasting on Monday, to seek the ministry’s intervention in connection with issues faced with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Rajkumar Kirani, Anurag Kashyap, Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, Vidya Balan, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Gulzar, Karan Johar, Vishal Bharadwaj, Mukesh Bhatt, and Shabana Azmi were among the celebrities who met Rathore.
Filmmakers have had to compromise on their film’s content after the Censor Boards newly appointed Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani revived a 2003 order to ban a list of 28 cuss words. The list made its way on the internet and also included words like ‘Bombay’.
Recently released films like ‘NH10’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ were also asked to make several cuts and adjustments in the film; these moves by the Board could hamper filmmakers’ creative process. Even the upcoming sex-comedy ‘Hunterrr’ has been asked to reword some of the ‘objectionable content’ in the film.
This new system has upset the film industry, and they have taken the matter to Arun Jaitley and Rathore. The fraternity feels Nihalani has created a ‘hostile’ environment for them to work in.
After the meeting Aamir Khan said, "I&B Minister also told us that it is not a censor board but, it’s a certification board."
"We met with Mr Rathore to discuss a range of key issues faced by us due to the latest guidelines issued by the censor board. We told him that the word censor has become very redundant. We asked him whether we are heading back to the dark days," Bhatt told
Addressing the media after the meeting, Rathore said, “The government is very clear that it wants scenes and dialogues in context to the script and the film and CBFC will follow that.” He also added that there will be more meetings in the future between the government and the film industry.
"Rathore said he will meet and discuss the issues faced by us at regular intervals. He assured that he is with us," Bhatt said after the meeting, which lasted for two-and-a half hours.
According to reports, the film fraternity members demanded the removal of Nihalani, however Rathore refuted those rumours. The minister is now scheduled to meet with the CBFC board members on Tuesday.
