Hyderabad: Chain-snatchers target elderly

Two others lose gold ornaments in two incidents within half an hour

Hyderabad: There were three incidents of chain snatchings on Sunday. Two men on a bike snatched a 30-gm gold chain from an elderly woman at Madinaguda area in Miyapur while a gang struck twice in half an hour in the Asifnagar area.

In the first incident at Miyapur, the victim was 58-year-old Savitha who, along with her husband Chandrakanth, had come to her son’s house in the Satyanarayana Enclave at Madinaguda. The elderly couple hails from Mumbai.

On Sunday, Savitha, Chandrakanth and their daughter-in-law decided to visit their daughter’s house in Bowenpally. While they were on way, two men with their faces covered with handkerchiefs, snatched the gold chain of Savitha.

According to the Miyapur police, two unidentified persons approached them on a Pulsar bike while they were looking for autorickshaws and flicked the gold ornament and fled.

A case has been booked and the police is examining surveillance camera footage available at the crime scene.

Meanwhile, chain snatchers, also on a red Pulsar, struck twice in 30 minutes at two places near Asifnagar.

The theives snatched a 30-gm gold ornament from a woman before snatching a 110-gram ornament from another victim 2 kilometres away.

A CCTV camera in the area captured the vehicle number, but police inquiry revealed that it was fake. The victims told cops that the snatchers were wearing surgical masks.

The two criminals first carried out the crime at Gudi Malkapur. The victim was one Vinolia.

“After half an hour, the same gang struck at pillar number 29, targeting a victim named M. Anitha. She had come to attend a function, and was going to buy fruits when the duo came on a bike and snatched her 110-gram gold ornament,” said P. Hrushikesh, detective sub-inspector of Asifnagar police station.

Police collected the CCTV footage from a nearby private establishment and found that the bike had a fake number plate. A case has been booked and cops have started an investigation.
