Hyderabad: The Telangana state government is considering a proposal to scrap Eamcet as, over the past five years, the number of seats in engineering colleges has surpassed the number of students applying for the test.
Kadiam Srihari, the Deputy CM and minister for education, said the government is examining the “Tamil Nadu model” of granting admissions in professional colleges based on marks secured in 10+2. “There is a debate going on for the past few years whether Eamcet should be continued or not as the number of seats in engineering colleges has surpassed the number of students applying for Eamcet. There is also an argument that the Eamcet has lost its relevance. We will consult all the stakeholders before taking a final decision,” Mr Srihari said. The minister was answering questions raised by Opposition members over Eamcet in the Legislative Assembly.
Congress MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar pointed out that as per AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, both TS and AP should conduct Eamcet jointly for 10 years, but both the states have announced their own schedules, forcing students to opt for multiple exams.
Mr Srihari dismissed the argument saying the decision of Telangana government to conduct its own Eamcet was in accordance with the Act. The minister said that Telangana government will take all the measures to safeguard interests of Telangana students, irrespective of which Eamcet they opt for.
