Malaysian mom meets son in Kerala after 46 years

Kerala resident traces his biological mother in Malaysia with kin’s help

Vadakara: It was a family reunion which was a result of a son’s relentless search for his biological mother who was separated from him when he was just ten months old. Rajamma came all the way from Malaysia to meet her son, Haridasan, who is now 47 years old and stays at Vadakara in Kerala.

The mother-son duo met on Thursday after 46 years. “I wanted to prove my identity before relatives, friends and locals,” said a teary-eyed Haridasan after meeting his Malaysian mother.

It was Haridasan’s relentless pursuit of years which led to him successfully tracing his mother through his father Kunjikannan’s Singapore-based friends.

After his first marriage, Kunjikannan went to Singapore in the 60s to pursue a driver’s job under a Navy captain. He met Rajamma, a nurse, there and the duo got married after which Haridasan was born.

When the Captain moved to London, Kunjikannan was asked to join him. Before going to London, Kunjikannan, with his 10-month-old son, visited Vadakara to meet his relatives. “But they did not let me go, leading to my separation from my mother,” recalled Haridasan.

Haridasan grew up with two half-brothers, his father’s children from the first marriage. After the death of Kunjikannan, Haridasan intensified his search with the help of his father’s diary and finally get in touch with Rajamma.

Meanwhile, Rajamma had returned to Malaysia and had a second marriage.

“I have no words to express my joy. En route I have visited Varanasi and Madurai to thank God for this reunion,” she said.
