VAIO releases their first smartphone, VAIO Phone
VAIO, a manufacturer of personal computers was originally a brand of Sony Corporation, till the latter sold it off to telecom service provider Japan Communications in February 2014 as part of their restructuring process. However, Sony still maintains 5 percent stake in the company. It is unclear that Sony is stepping down from the smartphone stage, but speculations are high since Sony soed not seem to be making profits from the smartphone market. However, Japan Communications had recently announced that they shall step foot into the smartphone industry with the brand name VAIO. Now VAIO has officially announced their first smartphone, VAIO Phone.
The VAIO smartphone is developed in partnership with the telecom service provider. It is a 5-incher Android-based smartphone and priced at $420 (approx Rs 25,200). The VAIO Phone is available in Black, measures 7.95mm and weighs in at 130g. It features a 5-inch TFT LCD IPS display with an HD resolution of 720x1280 pixels. Powering the VAIO Phone is a 1.2GHz quad-core processor (details not revealed), with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, expandable to 64GB. The single SIM smartphone features a 13MP camera (5MP front camera), runs Android Lollipop out-of-the-box and is fuelled by a 2500mAh non-removable battery.
Given the specifications of the smartphone, the price seems to be steep, but Japan Communications may have to lower the price by a huge amount if they plan to survive the rival market. There is no information about the continents where the VAIO will be available, but we are sure they will release it world-wide. Stay tuned.
