Freak rains lash Hyderabad, cut power

Around 600 colonies across the city were without power for 15-30 minutes

Hyderabad: Rain lashed parts of the city leading to inundation on the main roads throwing traffic out of gear. The sudden downpour also resulted in power cuts in some areas.

Around 600 colonies across the city were without power for 15 minutes to half-an-hour as 21 33 KV feeders and 150 11 KV feeders tripped.

Several areas in the city saw power cuts immediately after the downpour with cuts lasting two to three hours. Officials were unable to understand the extent of the impact up to 8.30 pm.

The trippings were in Sainikpuri, AS Rao Nagar, Defence Colony, East and West Marred-pally, Mahendra Hills, Madinaguda, Karkhana, Moosarambagh, Uppal, Kacheguda, Yapral, Toli Chowki and RK Puram.

Power cuts report in old city

Due to heavy winds, power cuts were reported in the old city areas like Karwan, Tappachabutra, Puranapul, Hussainialam and Bahadurpura.

Officials said that by 8.30 pm, 90 per cent of the affected supply could be normalised.

Moderate rain lasted for about 10 minutes in Hayathnagar, Vanasthalipuram, LB Nagar, Nagole, Saroornagar, Champapet, Kothapet, Khairtabad, Somajiguda, Punujagutta, Ameerpet, Kukatpally and other areas.

In these areas the traffic slowed down for a while and in some place the traffic stalled due to inundation.

The Hyderabad Metrological Department recorded a 0.2 to 0.5 mm of rainfall in these areas. It predicted isolated rain or thundershower for the next two days.

K. Sitaram, director, Indian Metrological Department, Hyderabad said, “There is weather wind interaction that is flowing into the state. Due to interaction between the very cold wind from North-East and warm wind coupled with moisture from South East, cloudy weather is prevailing and thundershowers are occurring. This might continue till March 9.”

Hailstorms may occur at isolated places in the districts of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Ranga Reddy, Warangal, Hyderabad, Medak and Nalgonda of Telangana state.
