Probe prison deaths: Hyderabad High Court
Hyderabad: A division bench of the Hyderabad High Court comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar on Monday directed the principal secretary to home department and director, medical and family welfare department of Telangana state, to inquire into deaths of inmates of Cherlapally Central Prison allegedly due to lack of medical facilities.
The bench was disposing off a petition by M. Salauddin Ayub, an undertrial prisoner, challenging the inaction of authorities in providing medical care to prisoners. He submitted that he was a victim of callousness of the authorities and that 23 prisoners died in 2014 under mysterious circumstances.
Elsewhere, the bench refused to entertain a PIL by professor G. Haragopal, a human rights activist, seeking to release life convicts on bail who have undergone two years sentence.
Scholarships approved by Telangana State
The Telangana State government has decided to implement the post-matric scholarships to eligible students as per the scholarship policy with respect to Article 371-D of the Constitution as applicable to TS. The government submitted a memo in this regard before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar on Monday.
Information on barring mantris sought
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar of the Hyderabad High Court on Monday sought to know from the Centre and Election Commission if there was any provision under law that bars Central and state ministers from campaigning for parties during elections. The bench granted four weeks time for filing a counter affidavit.
Hyderabad High Court: Why shift Telangana Secretariat?
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar of the Hyderabad High Court on Monday asked the Telangana government to place before it reasons for shifting the Secretariat in one week.
The bench was dealing with a PIL by Mohammed Haji, AAP leader. The petitioner said the state cannot shift the Secretariat due to Vaastu and that the decision of the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao in this regard is a ‘superstitious act’ which is against the norms of governance.
