Govt rules out handing over Afzal Guru's mortal remains to family

PDP legislators demanded the return of convict Afzal Guru’s mortal remains

New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has ruled out the possibility of handing over the mortal remains of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru to his family, as the latter was buried as per jail manual in an unmarked grave.

According to reports, the ministry has also refused to accept the PDP's demand for the convict's mortal remains, saying that it had been made for political reasons.

Earlier on Monday, a group of PDP MLAs demanded that the mortal remains of Afzal Guru be handed over to his family.

"PDP maintained that late Afzal Guru's hanging was travesty of justice and constitutional process was not followed", and this was repeated in the alleged PDP note.

The note has the endorsement of several PDP leaders. The legislators who signed the statement are Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Zahoor Ahmed Mir, Raja Manzoor Ahmad, Mohd Abas Wani, Yawar Dilawar Mir, Advocate Mohd Yosuf, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Noor Mohd Sheikh.

Afzal Guru was convicted in the 2003 Parliament attack case and was hanged secretly in Delhi's Tihar Jail on February 9 last year.
