Couples with low self-esteem likelier to stay unhappy

People with more negative self-concept often have doubts and anxieties

Washington: A new research has revealed that intimate partners with low self-esteem are more likely to stay in unhappy relationships.

The research, conducted by the University Of Waterloo, demonstrates that people with low self-esteem are mostly dissatisfied in the relationship as they do not voice relationship complaints with their partner because of the fear of rejection.

Megan McCarthy, the author of the study said that people with low self-esteem tend to be more negative and complain a lot more but only in the case of social situations, as in romantic relationships the partner with low self-esteem resists addressing problems.

McCarthy added that love partners need to pay attention if their significant other was not engaging in open and honest conversation about the relationship It is not likely that they don't care, but rather that they feel insecure and are afraid of being hurt.

The research observed that people with a more negative self-concept often have doubts and anxieties about the extent of rejection from their partner and damage to their relationship, which make them defensive, self-protective, and avoiding confrontation.

McCarthy concluded that love partners making each other believe on the forgive and forget nature could be constructive, and certainly it can be when we feel minor annoyances, but having a serious issue in a relationship, failing to address those issues directly can actually be destructive.
