Chennai: Fifty-year-old Md Shafiqul Islam, from Bangladesh, who had a history of chest discomfort and shortness of breath for the past one month, is now literally breathing easy, thanks to city surgeons who performed an advanced cardiac procedure and removed the block in the patient’s right coronary artery.
A coronary angiogram on Shafiqul in Bangladesh on January 1 showed a critical lesion in his right coronary artery whereupon he was referred to the SIMS Hospital at Vadapalani here for further treatment.
A coronary angiogram on February 23 showed 100 per cent stenosis (blockage) of the right coronary artery. A month ago the stenosis was 90 per cent. According to Dr. Jyotirmaya Dash, interventional cardiologist from the Institute of Cardiac Sciences at SIMS Hospital, who performed an angioplasty with a specialised stent called ‘Synergy Stent’, this platinum chromium stent was used for the first time in Tamil Nadu.
He claimed that the chances of stent thrombosis was minimised through this procedure. This advanced stent, it is said, ensures the patient’s quality of lifestyle after the intervention.
