Chennai: A 37-year-old woman, married thrice already and was into her fourth marriage, was arrested for cheating at least four businessmen across the state after marrying them.
K.V. Indu alias Gayathri of Coimbatore was arrested based on a complaint from her husband, Mogappair-based businessman Srinivasan. Indu introduced herself as a physics graduate on a matrimonial website and married him in 2014.
He became suspicious of her activities and found out that she was married thrice already and was in the process of marrying another person, Balaji of Ambattur. Based on his complaint, the Thirumangalam all women police station personnel conducted investigations and found the allegations to be true.
Indu had taken Rs 50,000 and five sovereigns of gold from Srinivasan already, the police said. “The woman kept on changing her profiles on the matrimonial site, lured well-off businessmen and cheated them. She called herself Subiksha, Sundaravalli, Indu and Gayathri in her different avatars and lived with the men only for three months,” said an investigating official. He added that the woman is fluent in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and English.
In 2010, she married building contractor Narasimha Rao, cheated him of Rs 2 lakh and cheated businessman Ravi Kumar of Tiruchy of Rs 1 lakh in 2012. She also cheated a temple priest, Rajagopalan, of Rs 1 lakh, the police said.
“We believe that there might be more men that she has conned as she had also used newspaper ads to lure unmarried men. We are expecting more complaints in the coming days,” said an investigating officer. Indu told the police that she wanted to lead a luxurious life and spent the cash on clothes and jewellery. The Thirumangalam AWPS are investigating.
