Lovelorn youth attacks classmate
Girl attacked with knife in classroom
Chennai: Unable to cope with break-up after three years of a relationship, a 21-year-old engineering student attacked his girlfriend, a fellow student, with a knife inside the classroom in front of students and a professor on Thursday. The boy and the girl are final-year Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) students of Velammal Engineering College on the Red Hills-Ambattur road, Surapet, off the Chennai-Nellore highway.
According to the students, around 9 am, R. Sakthivel walked up to K. Kavya (21) and started attacking her with the kitchen knife he was carrying. “The professor made a futile attempt at preventing him, but the boy pushed him down and in spite of the fellow students’ efforts to catch him, he managed to inflict cut injuries on the girl’s hands and on her body,” said a student.
The boy fled and was running down the corridor when the guards caught him. He was subsequently handed over to Ambattur police. The girl was taken to a private hospital in Ambattur where she is said to be in a stable condition. She was later shifted to a hospital run by the college management.
“There are no stab injuries. There are only cut injuries on her hands and she is stable,” said Ambattur inspector P. Stephen. However, the students said she had six cut injuries on her upper body.
The Ambattur police have registered cases under sections 324 IPC (voluntarily causing hurt using deadly weapons) and 506 (criminal intimidation) IPC and woman harassment Act. Sakthivel was remanded in judicial custody. He is a native of Sirkazhi, near Nagapattinam, and stays on rented premises at Thiruvengadam Nagar, near Ambattur. The girl is a native of Ranipet, in Vellore district, and stays in the hostel.
When contacted, an official of Velammal institutions said, “It is a stray incident. We have offered complete cooperation to the police and have shared every possible information with them.”
