New Delhi: To ensure transparency in the forthcoming BCCI elections, IPL spot fixing case petitioner Aditya Verma and his backers on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to appoint Justice R.M. Lodha as observer to monitor the poll process on March 2. “I would like to request the honourable Supreme Court to direct the BCCI that its elections should be held under the observations of Justice Lodha, who has been appointed to head the probe in the IPL spot fixing case. That is the only way to have free and fair elections,” said Subodh Kant Sahay, a former MP and chief of the Cricket Association of Jharkhand.
Sahay, who was also of the view that the BCCI’s annual general meeting should take place in Mumbai and not Chennai, pointed out that Srinivasan has been disobeying the apex court’s directives since May 16 last year. The most recent ruling from the SC prevented Srinivasan from presiding over the BCCI working committee on February 8 citing conflict of interest.
The Supreme Court will now hear the case on Friday. “It is surprising to know to what extent Srinivasan went to cling to power in the BCCI. On December 9, 2014, his counsel had to admit in court that attending the meeting was an error on his part. Again, on February 8, 2015, Srinivasan presided over the meeting saying he was cleared by the court,” he said.
